Haldwani: Accusing the State Government of being ignorant towards their long pending demands, the diploma engineers, who have been on indefinite strike for the past three days, have threatened to intensify their agitation in case their concerns are not addressed till March 20.
“If the State Government continues to ignore our long pending demands, diploma engineers of various other orgnisations like Jal Sasthan, Peyjal Nigam, UREDA, and health department, to name a few, would also join the stir from March 21”, said Naveen Kandpal, president of the Uttrakhand Diploma Engineers Federation (UDEF).Presently, diploma engineers from PWD, irrigation and minor irrigation departments and some other departments are on indefinite strike, he added. “Among other issues, our main demand has been promotion after five-year service at AE level, with `4,800 pay. Besides, we have also been urging the Government not to make UP Nirman Nigam as the functional agency. The fact is that so far since the inception of the State, the Uttrakhand Government has paid `400 crore to the UP Nirman Nigam, alleged Kandpal. At the same time, we have also demanded `4,600 pay for diploma engineers from the present `4,200. More so, contractual recruitment must also be stopped and those who have been working on contractual basis must be taken on ad hoc basis,” the UDEF president said.“Apart from that, we also call for a permanent transfer policy. Presently, the transfer policy in the State seems to have become a business,” alleged Kandpal.
“In case the Government continues to turn a deaf ear to our problems, we would launch jail bharo agitation from March25, and thereafter would chart our future course of action,” said PC Joshi, member of the UDEF’s Haldwani unit.Meanwhile, completion of various developmental works, for example - repair of roads as per the deadline, seems to have become a major challenge for various civic agencies, following the indefinite strike of the diploma engineers. The Government has already directed the concerned agencies like PWD to complete all kinds of road related repair works before commencement of Monsoon. But it seems, with diploma engineers, of various civic agencies like PWD, taking to the streets indefinitely with their long pending demands, these developmental works are unlikely to be completed as per schedule.
